Danger as expert urges NASS to ban genetically modified foods

Danger is lurking by massive consumption of wrong foods topped by foods produced from genetically modified tissues.

Nnimmo Bassey, Director, Health of Mother Earth Foundation has called on the National Assembly to pass a bill for the banning of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the country.

Bassey said the banning of GMOs foods become necessary following its threat to human health and the natural ecosystem.

He made the call at a public discourse organized by civil society organization and medical practitioners with the theme, “The state of Biosafety” in Benin City.

He noted that the banning of genetically engineered foods was to ensure access to safe foods for human consumption.

According to him, Nigerians are hoodwinked to rely on scientific conjecture of GMOs safety given to them by the same company trying to sell their products.

“I urged the National Assembly to put an outright ban on GMO foods and ensure regulatory agencies saddled with the responsibilities to be conscious of the genetically engineered foods.

“The National Assembly should call  the relevant agencies and ministries to ensure that GMO  products in Nigeria are labelled, if not totally recalled”, he said.

Some medical practitioners who also criticized the rate at which GMOs enter the country, however called for public awareness on dangers genetically engineered products pose to human health.

“There is need to be wary of how we alter nature so that there will be no massive implications. We have to be very careful how we accept the GMOs concept”, they added.

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.
