Jonathan to speak at Lift Above Poverty event in Abuja

Former president, Goodluck Jonathan, who just bagged global status as a world diplomat and peace ambassador, will make a rare presence in Abuja to speak to Nigerians on fighting poverty through health schemes.


The Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health is set to host the 28th edition of the Annual LAPODevelopment Forum on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

The event with the theme ‘Promoting Community-Based Cancer Control Programme in Nigeria: The LAPO-C4 Initiative’ will be hosted at the Yar’Adua International Conference Centre, Abuja under the distinguished chairmanship of His Excellency, former President GoodluckEbele Jonathan, GCFR.

Other dignitaries confirmed to speak at the Annual Development Forum include the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. OsagieEhanire,former Edo State DeputyGovernor and Chief of Staff to the President, ChiefMike Oghiadomhe, the Chief Executive Officer of LAPO, Dr Godwin Ehigiamusoewhile Prof OmokhoaAdeleye, Professor of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Benin will deliver the keynote lecture.

Stakeholders expected at the event include government functionaries, policymakers, political and religious leaders, the academia, Civil Society Organizations, Professional institutions, Development Partners and health practitioners.

LAPO Executive Director, DrHonestus Ayo Obadiora said the forum would “address the challenges inhibiting Community-Based Cancer Control Programme in Nigeria and come up with practicable initiatives expected to ensure access to quality cancer prevention and treatment services in rural communities, as well as harness national strategies and policies for effective cancer control in Nigeria.”

Initiated in 1994, the Annual LAPO Development Forum has become a faculty of development in its own right. The annual conferencing has over the years stimulated discourse on the development agenda in Nigeria and Africa with very realistic solutions canvassed by guest lecturers and conferees.

The discourse has previously played host to distinguished personalities and top government functionaries including Gen. Yakubu Gowon, former President OlusegunObasanjo, former CBN Governor, Prof. Charles Soludoand Hon. Justice Samson Uwaifo JSC (Rtd).
