Kabba mourn death of 4 HND graduates in well-digging disaster

Kabba/Bunu local government area in Kogi State early in the week witnessed what they term irreplaceable loss when four Higher National Diploma graduates who specialize in digging wells sunk and died after digging a well.

According to an eye witness account, the tragedy occurred at Zango quarters in Kabba where a primary school mistress,  Agnes Baiyere, had contracted the deceased to dig a well in the front of her newly constructed four bedroom apartment.

Baiyere, who is a teacher in St Mary’s primary school, Kabba, was said to have earlier contracted one of the deceased named David who had invited his colleagues to dig the well.

The well was said to be about 25 feet and was dug for about a week. It was said to have been completed with all the finishing done as the well cover had been put in place and the outer part of the well plastered when two of them went back on Monday evening at about 6 pm to evacuate some broken blocks that fell into the well.

However, when one of them entered into the well he was said to have complained of dizziness which led to the other person quickly coming to his aid, but the two were mysteriously trapped into the well and could not come out.

When the two others learnt about the incident, they immediately raced to the well to rescue their colleagues, but they were also trapped and could not come out.

This led to the land lady and tenants wailing, which in turn drew the attention of sympathizers to the scene who at this point became so much afraid as rumour of ‘mummy water’ went wild.

Meanwhile Staff of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Kabba office, were said to have been contacted who raced to the scene with their ladder with which the remains of the four deceased persons were evacuated.

The eye witness equally said  they were being rushed to the General Hospital, Kabba,  but added that one of the deceased opened his eyes after a certain pastor offered intense prayers but he gave up as they were stepping into the hospital.

A woman described one of the deceased which he identified as David, and a member of her church as very gentle and hard-working, adding that David and his colleagues used this vocation to train themselves up to HND level, and David just got married after completing his NYSC last year. He was said to have attended the new month service in his church that day.

Meanwhile, the land lady of the house was said to have collapsed on sighting the evacuated corpses and has since been rushed to the hospital where she is now receiving treatment.

The remains of the deceased whose ages ranged from 30to 35 have been deposited at the morgue of the general hospital Kabba for autopsy. It was also gathered that two of  them were siblings and their names are David, Sunday, Ayo and Ogbekedo.
