Vice Chairman of Lobi Stars Football Club, Mike Idoko, has attributed the team’s qualification for the group stage of the CAF Champions League to God and prompt attention given to it by Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.
Speaking on Lobi’s victory over Gor Mahia FC of Kenya in Enugu yesterday, Mr Idoko said the players were adequately motivated by the Benue State Government ahead of the game.
He said December salaries of the players were paid before the match, in addition to other incentives the Ortom administration provided to enable the team record victory.
“The Benue State Government must be commended. We have been in camp longer than any other club in Nigeria, courtesy of the government. We went and played Gold tournament in Akure, went to Asaba to play champion of champions. No Nigerian club prepares the way we have prepared and because we started preparation early, we are getting good results now”, Idoko stated.
The Lobi Stars Vice Chairman pointed out that the decision of Governor Ortom to mobilize supporters by providing free buses to Enugu spurred the players to get the needed goals for qualification to the group stage of competition.
He gave assurance that the team would work harder to also win their next matches and lift the biggest CAF club trophy.
Mr Idoko said the victory over Gor Mahia was the club’s Christmas gift to Governor Ortom and his Deputy, Engr Benson Abounu.
Meanwhile, Gov Ortom described the victory of Lobi Stars over Gor Mahia Football Club of Kenya in today’s CAF Champions League encounter in Enugu as a result of hard work, uncommon determination and true professionalism.
The Governor commends the players and management of Lobi Stars for coming from the 1-3 defeat in the first leg to beat the Kenyan champioms by two goals to nil to qualify for the group stage of the competition.
He urges the team to sustain their current momentum and confidence in subsequent matches to be able to win the continent’s biggest club trophy for Nigeria.
Governor Ortom, on behalf of the government and people of Benue State, appreciates football fans in Enugu and neighbouring states for coming out in their numbers to cheer Lobi Stars to victory.
