No kobo from FG on N120Bn Bonny Road – Wike

  • Gov throws doubt at FG Transport University, deep sea port, other proposed projects for Rivers ahead 2023

Gov Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has accused the FG of neglect, saying they have not released a kobo on the N120Bn Bodo-Bonny Road.

Could it be true that the federal government has not released any amount out of its 50 per cent counterpart fund commitment to the N120Bn ongoing but historic road from Bodo to Bonny Island in Rivers State? The project had been on the drawing board for 47 years before the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) made a move to get it off the ground.

The project was thus initiated by the NLNG few years ago with the FG made to take up N60Bn, being half of the cost while the NLNG takes half. Problem began when the project was difficult to make it to the annual budgets until about 2017 when the Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, announced that it had been accommodated in that year’s budget.

Now, Gov Nyesom Wike has disclosed in Port Harcourt Thursday, November 12, 2020, that the FG has not released a kobo on the project. He rather said the NLNG was asking to fund all of it and recoup through tax deductions.

Gov Wike who spoke when some All Progressives Congress (APC) members decamped to the ruling party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), used the case of the Bodo-Bonny road as example of how he said Rivers State was being marginalized by the FG.

He said; “Look at since they started the Bonny Bodo Road, what has happened? As we speak, Federal Government has not released their counterpart funding for that road. Now, NLNG said let us do it and then deduct it from the tax we are going to pay to the federal government. Is it how they have been doing in other states?”

The governor now threw mud at the promises to build a transport university in Ubima, Rivers State, a deep sea port, and an industrial park in the State. He called these false promises.

He went on; “By next year, political activities will kick start, when will they build infrastructure again? Somebody will come and tell you people, Federal Government has approved industrial pack; they have approved deep sea port in Bonny”.

Gov Wike, said the PDP provided the only hope for Nigerians and congratulated those who defected for their courage to return to the party. He assured them that they would be accorded the same respect like every other party.

He said he has used huge projects to kill the local opposition parties.
