Over 500 organisations are said to have come together to work for the success of the three year old UN-backed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The South-South Cordinator of SDGs, Dr Mina Ognaga, who disclosed this on Tuesday, September, 25, 2018, at a one day training, said Civil Society Coalition on Sustainable Development Goals (CSCSDG) is the first registered National network with regional offices across the nation.
The 500 CSOs would hope to promote engagement with Cross sector CSOs on 2030 development agenda and collectively empower civil actors and the vulnerable to work for social inclusion, climate justice and equality.
Dr Ogbanga also said they would build capacity of Civil Actors to localize and track the SDGs across the 36 States of Nigeria and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through research, training, advocacy and human capital development.
She said the CSOs would help to design and promote knowledge Practice and Indicators for the promotion of development policies towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and monitor, evaluate and advocate feedbacks from target stakeholders especially the vulnerable so as to mainstream support
Our Organizational Structure:
The Civil Society Coalition on Sustainable Development has National Steering Committee, Board of Directors,^ Regional Officers and 36 State officers working closely with the vulnerable and marginalized at the grassroots towards building a peaceful, prosperous, sustainable and inclusive world
Currently, all regions are carrying out specific regional initiatives to mark the global day of action .For the South South,we are carrying out the Act4Sdgs First Regional Policy Dialogue on the SDGs.The theme is “strenghtening the capacity of civil society to localise, monitor and Act4Sdgs to #Stopairpollution..The importance of the theme cannot be underestimated as it portrays the importance of a priority issue facing us in the South South-Climate Change. Our position as Civil Society is that addressing climate change and its effects is a collective decision and action we can take . The rising sea levels with attendant floods ,the emissions and so much more calls for a declaration of a state of emergency on pollution.CSCSD South South wants to address the same matter in a different way hence our vision to build and bring together development actors to joining the world in taking action. We want to build a regional movement that will make each action count. Those broader objectives are what guides this dialogue.
Essentially, this dialogue has two parts:The Regional Assembly where all Executives and members deliberate on the way forward for the coalition .Then the second part which is the Celebration of the global day of action.
As you may be aware, every September 25th – the SDGs Anniversary – the UN SDG Action Campaign mobilizes the UN, national and local governments, youth groups, civil-society organizations, the media, the academia and the private sector in every corner of the world with a global call to Action for the SDGs.
The Global Day to #Act4SDGs mobilises multi-stakeholders and connects and amplifies the impact of local and global actions for the SDGs, encouraging a global movement for the achievement of the SDGs.
In 2018, three years after the adoption of the SDGs, the UN SDG Action Campaign is working with partners like CSCSD to mobilise actions, connect partners and share best practices across countries and regions.
So on behalf of the CSCSd South South and our partners including the UN SDG Action Campaign and all members of our Coalition,we invite you to consider joining the Global Day to #Act4SDGs by taking actions to advocate for or call attention to the SDGs.
The place of the media in understanding and putting to practice steps to achieving the SDGs cannot be underestimated. It is therefore our hope that not only do we look forward to making this an annual event,we also look forward to partnering with the media in more ways than one.
Following this dialogue today will be the #Act4Sdgschallenge Award ceremony. That seeks to amplify the voices of innovative actions in schools and communities and a third award for the film and documentary category.
We will also have the Port Harcourt Declaration which we hope will move the region foreward. within this gathering lies that one solution that could change the fortune of the region for good and we hope to unveil that.
We thank you for being here and on behalf of the 6State Coordinators, and 30zonal /Excos members as well as the hundreds of development actors here we urge you to keeping for Mainstreaming of SDGs across our development plans as a state as in that way,we can stand to be counted.
