The nation woke up with tension from political capital of Nigeria where men of the Directorate of State Service (DSS) took over the National Assembly (ASS) barring most senators and Reps access to the complex.
The NASS was called on recess probably to allow tension calm down in the face of defections and plots and counter plots against the leadership of the senate.
By noon, the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, sacked the boss of the DSS and calmed nerves everywhere. The senators easily went into their workplace where they allegedly earn N13.5m every month.
DSS strikes first;
Our source reported that security operatives on Tuesday barred some lawmakers, newsmen and staff of the National Assembly from entering the National Assembly complex.
The News Agency of Nigeria first reported that security operatives who were in their numbers, barricaded entrance to the complex as early as 7 a.m. No reason was given for this.
Some of the lawmakers cited as at the time of this report were PDP lawmakers, including Sen. Shittu Ubale(PDP-Jigawa), Sen. Ben Bruce(PDP-Bayelsa) and Sen. Rafiu Ibrahim(PDP-Kwara), Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi(PDP-Delta).
Speaking to newsmen, Bruce said it was an affront on democracy. He called on relevant authorities to call those responsible to order. Sen. Rafiu Adebayo(PDP-Kwara)who was also one of the early comers at the complex was refused entry.
The lawmaker expressed his frustration over the siege, saying it was dangerous for democracy. While asking the security operatives who gave them instruction to do so, he said,” has the military taken over the National Assembly now.”
A staff of the national assembly who pleaded anonymity, said the man power loss due to the the situation would be regretted, saying,” today is a work day.
“We are now on compulsory holiday when we should be working.”
There has been fillers of impeachment move against the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, since his defection from the All Progressives Congress(APC), to the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).
Some APC lawmakers also in recent interviews with newsmen, warned that there will be no peace until Saraki resigned as president of the senate.
As at the time of this report, Saraki had not reacted to the development./(NAN)
Osinbajo strikes DSS boss:
The Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has directed the termination of the appointment of the Director General, State Security Service, Lawal Musa Daura with immediate effect.
According to a statement by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Daura has been directed to hand over to the most senior officer of the State Security Service until further notice.
Osinbajo, SAN, has also described the unauthorized takeover of the National Assembly complex earlier today, Tuesday, as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all accepted notions of law and order.
According to him, the unlawful act which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency is condemnable and completely unacceptable.
“By this statement, Professor Osinbajo is consequently assuring Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action,” Akande said.
