Politics in the 2023 elections in Rivers State and some other states has been underlined by twists and turns. This seems to continue to its logical end.
Details:
The strange support choices for political positions by leaders in Rivers State has continued with the governor of the state, Sir Sim Fubara, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rooting for the All Progressives Congress (APC) choices in the National Assembly.
The strange support fashion began when ex-governor, Chief/Barr Nyesom Wike, ditched his party’s presidential candidate for APC’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Next, Tinubu gave the nod and Wike’s PDP governorship choice became the choice of Rivers APC faction loyal to Tinubu.
The cross-party support system led a faction of APC in the state loyal to former minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, to allegedly back PDP’s Atiku Abubakar albeit in a subtle way.
Now, PDP’s strongman, Wike, is backing APC’s Godwill Akpabio and others endorsed by Tinubu.
In that guise, thus, Gov Fubara has declared the stance of the State to support the APC preferred choices of Akpabio as Senate President and Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The 10th National Assembly is expected to be proclaimed by the president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 13, 2023.
In a meeting with the National Assembly members-elect of Rivers State at the Executive Council Chambers of Government House, Port Harcourt, on Friday, Gov Fubara explained that the declared support is to advance Nigeria’s interest.
He asserted that the position of the State should be the interest of all elected national assembly members from Rivers State who are expected to be formally admitted to either of the chambers when proclaimed.
The Rivers State governor charged members-elect not to veer off the declared interest of the state in order to remain focused in electing the preferred choices.
He admonished the members-elect to always work together as a team to make the desired impact and enjoy the dividends that follow.
Fubara assured the members-elect of continuous support so as to remain relevant in national affairs.
Speaking on behalf of the members-elect, the Senator-elect for Rivers Southeast Senatorial district, Barry Mpigi, commended Gov Fubara for the strategic meeting and assured that members would certainly work in line with the charge of the governor as the leader of the state.
