Civil Society Organisations and members of the family present at the university of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) have recoiled and said the corpse of Chima Ikwunado of the Ikokwu 5 saga has said it all. They said the body shows heavy marks of torture and cruelty.
Reports say a second autopsy of the Ikoku Mechanic murdered by the Eagle Crack Unit of the Rivers State Police, Chima Ikwunado, has commenced at the University Of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
The family of the deceased and Civil Society Organizations said on Monday that Chima’s body has marks of torture.
The latest revelation is against claims by the police who alleged that the late mechanic died of high blood sugar.
Rivers State commissioner of police Mustapha Dandaura who met with family members of late Chima Ikwunado at the State Police Headquarters at Moscow Road, Port Harcourt last week, noted that the Police is poised to ensure all those involved in the matter are investigated and if found guilty persecuted.
He said that he has been directed by the force headquarters to investigate the matter and submit a report on it. The Police Commissioner also appealed to the family to exercise patience while investigation and autopsy are being carried out to enable them properly persecute the matter.
Now, Civil Society Organizations said that the grievous wounds on the body of late Chima indicate that the deceased suffered brutal torture with machete cuts before his death.
Enefaa Georgewill, Chairman of RIVSCO, told newsmen at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital that Chima’s body is horrible. He said Chima was tortured to death, regardless of the outcome of the autopsy report.
He said: “We have confirmed that the body is Chima’s and we must say that with the level of torture that was meted on Chima was out of this world.
”Chima was not tortured to death, he was butchered to death, cracked bones, handcuffs, neck-cuffs, wounds and many more. The whole of his hands were machete wound. You could see it. This is wickedness in the highest place even when torture has been outlawed in our constitution. The Police that was meant to protect citizens decided to maltreat a citizen to this level.
”With the level of injury I don’t think there is need for any autopsy anymore. It is enough to conclude that Chima was butchered to death.”
