By Ignatius Chukwu & Mercy Enoch

A student went home to report to his parents that he was flogged by his teacher for being part of those who jumped fence to go drink up palm-wine belonging to a tapper.

The father pulled out a cane (now suspected to be charmed) and proceeded to the secondary school in Agbor, Delta State. At the state, he flogged the teacher to death.

The matter was transferred from Agbo to Asaba, the state capital.

Now, the student has been freed as a minor but the father has been handed to the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID) for thorough investigation.

Details:

The incident took place Wednesday, October 18, 2023. The handover was said to be for diligent investigation.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bright Edafe, confirmed this to newsmen on Thursday, October 19, 2023, in Asaba.

The internet shook when news broke that a teacher had just been killed by a parent.

The news was escalated by the Old Boys of Class of 1988 who took to social media to broadcast the ugly incident.

Reports said the sad incident began as drama at Alihami Secondary School, Agbor, Delta State, where a group of students allegedly went outside the school on mischief missions.

It was gathered that the students drank up all the drinks in a nearby palm wine tree. It was also gather that the students returned quietly to the school compound, only for the aged farmers to come complaining.

The teacher, Sunday Onyisi Ufah, had flogged all the culprits, but one child did not end the matter there.

He was said to have complained to his father who allegedly called the teacher threatening to come and beat him up.

Later, it was gathered, the father stormed the school and challenged Ufah. The challenge led to the father mercilessly flogging the teacher with a cane he brought from home.

The teacher who has a big record of evangelism and discipline was said to have collapsed. He was carried to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival (DOA).

The aggressor and his child were said to be immediately arrested by the police in Agbor and taken to Asaba.

The angry Old Boys wrote: “With heavy hearts we regret to announce the sudden death of Sunday Onyisi Ufah, Class of 1988.

“Until his shocking & untimely death today, Ufah, an indigene of Owa Oyibu, Ika North East LGA of Delta State, was a teacher with Alihami Secondary School, Agbor.”

The obituary said his sad event happened after some students of the school allegedly scaled the school fence, stole and drank off an old palm wine tapper’s wine.

“The old man reported to the school authorities who immediately identified the culprits and flogged them as a disciplinary measure.

“One of the students got home and informed his diabolical father, who after calling to threaten the teacher (Mr. Ufah) severally, came to school today and after exchange of words, flogged the teacher, who then slumped and died shortly before arrival at the Central Hospital, Agbor.”

The principal of the school is said to be an old-boy too, of 1982 set. “God have mercy on Mr. Ufah’s soul and grant him rest.”

The PPRO told BusinessDay that the student was no longer in detention because he is a minor. The police said it is the father that is a suspect in the case.

The incidents has set tongues wagging because many parents now rush to schools to make trouble on behalf of their wards. This seems to have gone so bad that parents now seem to go to schools with charmed weapons.

Calls are already going to the Federal Ministry of Education to make haste and protect teachers by coming out with new regulations barring parents from accessing schools.
