Edo State is going for governorship elections in September 2020 but the World Bank has just approved huge sums for spending on education in the state. Could this mean keener interest in the elections?
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Thursday said the World Bank has approved the sum of $75 million (N40 billion) facility for the revamping of Education sector in the state.
Obaseki who is the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 19, 2020 governorship election made the disclosure during a campaign visit to the palace of Elawure of Usen in Ovia South West Local Government Area of the State.
The governor noted that the education sector under his watch will no longer produce thugs but raise children who will be exposed to learning and literacy, as well as vocational education.
The PDP governorship candidate who backed the probing of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) added that his administration will not be scared of signing more Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) only for ultimate benefit of the people of the state.
He assured that the World Bank loan would be utilised in changing the face of Education in Edo and Nigeria for the next three years.
“I am very glad to inform you that our efforts in revamping Education in Edo State and Nigeria have now been richly rewarded. Yesterday (Wednesday), the board of The World Bank approved the sum of $75 million facility for the revamping of Education in Edo State.
“What that means is that over the next three years, we will have about N40 billion to utilise in changing the face of Education in Edo and Nigeria. These is because of the fantastic work which members of our team has undertaken in the past few years to show the world of what we can do with our Educational system.
“I am not afraid of signing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) whenever the need arises considering the gains that have been recorded so far.
“Education is very apt and we have started working to reposition and re-enact Education in Edo State particularly beginning with Basic Education, ” he said
He said the loan facility will help the state government to do more at the Secondary schools level which the government had already started at basic Education as well as launched the tertiary education system on the path of progress.
While commending members of his team for undertaking the fantastic work, he assured that this will be the last time in the history of education system in the state will produce thugs.
He also assured that by the time a child has gone through five years of learning, the child would be exposed not to learning and literacy, but, a vocation.
The amount could spur the two major combatants in the election to fighter harder so as to be the one to spend such money.
