Oba of Benin told to intervene again, wins plaudits for previous action for peace

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare ll, has been urged to again speak to the political actors in the state to bring down threats of violence. The Oba also won rare commendations from the highest policing authority in Nigeria for his intervention for peace in Edo State over violent activities in the run-in to the September 19, 2020 governorship elections.

The plaudits came from the Inspector- General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Monday, September 14, 2020, dring a visit to the Oba’s palace. The IGP urged the Oba to once again speak to the politicians because the final week is here and the signs of violence have appeared again.

The IG said the peace meeting and intervention by the Benin monarch with the leaderships of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state yielded positive results.

The Inspector- General of Police also pleaded with the monarch to once again speak to the political gladiators to sheathe their swords. “We asked the palace to speak to the political gladiators just like the way they did before. First time he spoke to them, there was result, and all the violence went down.

“When the Oba intervened, the violence went down and because we don’t want to have such things to be repeated, we have increased the number of personnel to 31,000 police officers that will be deployed to the polling units, collation centers, INEC facilities to make sure that nobody disturbs the election”, he said.

He said a total of 31,000 police officers would be deployed to beef up security during the Edo State governorship election scheduled to hold on Saturday, September 19.

He said the security personnel would be deployed to polling units, collation centers, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) facilities to make sure that nobody disturbs the election.

In his remarks, the Benin monarch commended the IGP for acknowledging the effort of the throne in the peace meeting.

The Oba who said no election has generated tensions of this nature, urged the security agency to live up to expectations.
