The controversial local government elections in Rivers State took off on wobbly legs as distribution of materials from LG centres to wards delayed up to 11am in some areas. In Ogba/Ndoni/Egbema areas, the polling stations were reportedly deserted as citizens said the elections would not hold.
In other parts, markets were going and movements were free. Rivers Electoral Commission said they got security tips not to release materials in some areas yet.
However, distribution started late and voting started at last. It is expected that somehow, voting would take place in all palces and results would be out. The PDP is expected to sweep the polls, but it is credibility that the party may be fighting for.
The rival APC shunned the elections because they insisted the one conducted by former governor, Chibuike Amaechi, in 2015, was valid.
No security incidents have so far been reported.
