Students anywhere must learn the habit of saving from the early stages by cutting down on consumption. If consumption overtakes income and savings are not done, the students may grow into heavy spenders with little income, which could be recipe for a life of crime.

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has advised secondary school students in Imo State to curtail their consumption habits in order to imbibe the culture of setting aside some money as savings which will help and enhance their well-being in the future.
This was the highlight of the NDIC World Savings Day 2023 with the theme ,: Conquer your tomorrow through savings ” on Thursday 1s February, 2024 at Government Secondary School Owerri, Imo State.
According to NDIC, the event could have held in November last year, 2023 in Imo State but because of the November governorship election in Imo State, it was put off and rescheduled.
NDIC also stated that the event was put together by the Bankers Committee, to insure that students are thought how to save and to promote financial inclusion in the country.
Students selected from eleven secondary schools in Imo State participated. The schools include; Obube Community Secondary School , Egbelu Obube, Development Secondary School Douglas Road , Boys Model Secondary School New Owerri, Girls Secondary School Ikenegbu, Urban Development Secondary School World Bank, Owerri City College.
Others are Emmanuel College Owerri, Girls Secondary School, Akwakuma, Imo Girls Secondary School Owerri, Government Secondary School Owerri which was the host centre.
Hamilton Sampson, the Zonal Coordinator noted that the essence was to promote financial inclusion and advised the students to form the habit of saving while they would as much as possible, shun buying whatever appealed to them.
While explaining to them, the benefits of saving money, Sampson advised that taking the right decision to open a student’s bank account will help them in future because “you are the leaders of tomorrow”.
He also advised them that they could even tell their parents to open bank accounts for them, or they could also use their smart phones to open Online Bank account. And that even as students, they can even know how to create a personal budget.
Meanwhile, Darlington Nwagha, the Principal of the host secondary school,, Government Secondary School Owerri has commanded NDIC for chosen his school as the venue. He emphasised on the need for them to reduce their consumption so as to encourage saving some money.
This is as he also commended NDIC on the theme of the World Savings Day 2023 “Conquer your tomorrow through savings “.
He advised the students to focus their attention on the seminar so that they could learn how to save, because “you are here to benefit not only yourself but for your school and your parents “.
And, living like a big boy or big girl is by brain and not wearing clothe”.
