Wike opens Real Madrid Acedemy in PH, waves ‘good bye’ to Russia-bound Super Eagles


– Vows to continue investing in sports

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that the State Government will continue to invest in sports development to empower Rivers youths.

Speaking during a Courtesy Visit by the President of International Sports Press Association, Mr Gianni Merlo at the Government House Port Harcourt on Monday, Governor said the relevance of sports to social development cannot be over-emphasised.

He said: “We will continue to do more for sports. We will not relent in our commitment to use sports as a tool to empower Rivers youths.

“The Real Madrid Football Academy is a project we are very serious about. We shall use it to reach several youths”.

The governor thanked the leadership of International Sports Press Association for the Power of Sports Award, saying that it is a recognition that is well received by Rivers people.

“You have shown support and brotherhood.  We will work with you . The State whole-heartedly accepts to host the next congress”, he said.

Earlier, the President of International Sports Press Association , Mr Gianni Merlo expressed satisfaction with the fact  that Governor Wike is investing in the next generation.

He said the setting up of Real Madrid Football Academy in Rivers State is a well-thought out initiative that will be appreciated in years to come.

Governor Wike joins soccer fans to send off Super Eagles to Russia 2018

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Monday night joined about 40,000 football lovers to watch the World Cup send off match between Super Eagles and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Also present at the International Friendly were: the President of Confederation of African Football, Ahmad Ahmad, Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, President Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinick, Two Former Super Eagles Captains, Nwankwo Kanu and Joseph Yobo.

The match which ended 1-1 witnessed the display of soccer artistry by the two teams.

Governor Wike led other dignitaries for the opening formalities.

Governor Wike expressed confidence that the Super Eagles will perform well in the World Cup.

He urged Nigerians  to support the team all through their World Cup in Russia, saying that football is a major uniting factor for the country.

It will be recalled that the Super Eagles started their World Cup qualifying campaign in Port Harcourt.
