Written by silvernewsng

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday held a stakeholders engagement on the implementation of Green House Gas registry for the state.

The engagement tagged ” Lagos Green House Gas Registry and Industrial Sector Emissions Inventory Development in Support of the Lagos Emissions Cap-and Trade Scheme” is powered by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).

In his keynote speech, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Tunde Ajayi, said that the rate of emission of Greenhouse Gas (GHGs) was alarming and could not be over emphasised considering the devastating effects on the air quality of Lagos state.

According to him, GHGs has serious implication on public health and economic downturn.

Ajayi described GHGs as gases from human activities on the earth’s atmospheres that could n trap heat which in turn raises the earth’s average temperature – a phenomenon known as global warming.

“In line with this administrations’ commitment to “Health and Environment,” LASEPA, wishes to inform the public about the importance of GHG reporting and the role of the registry in combating climate change

“Consequently, the establishment of a comprehensive carbon registry is a pivotal step in our State’s commitment to address the challenges of Green House Gases and build resilience against climate change impacts.

“This will serve as a vital tool for tracking, managing, and mitigating GHGs emissions, enabling us to make informed decisions and implement effective environmental policies.

“I believe that the success of this initiative hinges on the active participation and collaboration of all stakeholders to chart a way forward in a quest for environmental sustainability,” Ajayi said.

He noted that the engagement would provide a digital platform for open dialogue, knowledge sharing, initiative and ideas to develop standard protocols and guidelines for reporting GHG emissions.

He added that the overall aim was to ensure consistency and comparability across different entities towards a shared goal.

“Businesses can benefit from global opportunities offered by climate change, thus enhance green investment and earnings.

“By fostering a collaborative environment, we can build Emission and GHGs registry that is effective and sustainable in Lagos State.

” It is , however, imperative to implement the use of a sustainable Greenhouse Gas registry to help track and record GHG emissions from various sectors,” Ajayi said.

In his introduction of the GHG registry, Dr Mofoluso Fagbeja, the Lead Consultant from TPHG Technologies Ltd said:

“The carbon registry database is the primary repository for GHG emission information in Lagos state.

“GHG registry is to be integrated with sector specific GHG and air pollutant emissions inventories.

“It will be designed with two different User Interfaces (UI).

“The front end UI will be used for public display of carbon emissions in Lagos state.

“Backend UI will oversee the administrative and technical management of the registry and inventories.

One of the stakeholders, Mr Gbenga Adeleke, Group Head, Environment and Social Risk Manager for Access bank said that the registry would brings Lagos State and Nigeria into the global compact.

Adeleke said that the registry would give a metrics for GHG emissions in the state to reduce its impact on climate change and health of Lagos residents.

He noted that Access bank had a robust GHG emission inventory that is in tandem with the bank’s commitment to sustainability, ‘impacting in our world positively.’ (NAN)
