It was a relief yesterday as Light Up Port Harcourt held a Press Conference to create a platform/strucrure that will showcase talents in Port Harcourt. According to Mr Happy Agi, the Chief Executive Officer of Light Up Port Harcourt, the programme is an entertainment project aimed at showcasing Port Harcourt City and its talent potentials.

He said: “We have identified a gap in the music industry and we intend to close that gap, which is not about dearth of talents but about promoting the talents, and providing platforms to showcase those talents. That is the gap we want to close.”

This vision which was birthed on December 27, 2023, now a reality, aims to sell Port Harcourt to the world by projecting Garden City talents to the world. It is not restricted to indigenes of Port Harcourt but all of Rivers State and all those who had stints in Port Harcourt at one time or the other.

Mr Agi also said that the first outing took place on March 9, 2024 and that the next one coming up on September 15, 2024, is a special edition because it is going to be an all-Port Harcourt artistes show.

“We want to tell the world that we are here and that we have so many talents,” he added.

Speaking at the Press Conference, Mr Tonye Ibiama, the Chief Executive Officer of Grafton Records also said that they are trying to celebrate talents in Port Harcourt music zone and that their company has always picked up talents from Port Harcourt, and Nigeria has always harvested and enjoyed musicians from Port Harcourt over the decades.

“We have tried to create platforms for Port Harcourt artistes to show themselves to the world. The platform called ‘Climax Night’ produced Burna Boy that is now the king of Africa. The truth is, no platform, no talent.

“The drive is not only for national artistes but for upcoming ones. We expect the City to help nurture Port Harcourt artistes. We are here to let the world know this. I am particularly appealing for support.”

According to K.O. Baba, some of them are supporting this project enthusiastically because it is focused on Port Harcourt. (It is Port Harcourt-centric). He said they are committed to promoting Port Harcourt because Port Harcourt is far from maximizing its potentials.

K.O Baba also said that Comedy is succeeding faster in Port Harcourt but musicians have harder route to success. He said scalability is harder in music especially for Port Harcourt talents because Port Harcourt talents lack structure, they suffer setback because of platforms and sponsors to showcase themselves.

He noted that a booming Entertainment Industry attracts investors and boost businesses in this part of Nigeria, it will reduce crime drastically. He also said that Entertainment remains the highest employer of labour in Port Harcourt.

The September Mega Music Festival was also announced to hold at the biggest and most modern event centre in the South-South, the EUI Centre, Port Harcourt.
